LiIon Batts - Ready for PrimeTime (the 600 class Heli Version)?
TLDR: Compared to a 6S SMC 5900mah HV2 LIPO, a LiIon 6S2P 21700 EVE 50PL (12 Cells) 10,000mah delivers similar flight performance and an ‘additional’ 5:30 of flight time in an SAB Raw 580 (600 class heli) - for a total flight time of 11:01 - on a single pack.
THE COMPARISON
LIPO
SMC 6S 5900 mah (when charged to 4.35v) HCL-HV2 (High Life Cycle - High Voltage - version 2 chemistry)
Weight - 747g with connector
LIION
I had a battery custom built by DIY500AMP
Bu LİNKİ görmek için izniniz yok. Giriş yap veya üye ol
to the following specs:
6S2P 21700 EVE 50PL Cells (12)
0.3 Copper plate with 10 AWG cables
Charged to 4.20v Per Cell
Dimensions: 77mm height, 140mm length, 47mm width
Weight - 864g with connector
TEST HELI NOTES
I used a SAB Raw 580 with the following components:
-Xnova Motor L4025/1.5Y-1120(KV) 8P
-YGE Saphir 155 ESC
-Torq Servos
-Spirit GTR Flybar
-Jeti radio equipment
HEAD SPEEDS
-Medium - 2,000
-High - 2,300
CG and FITMENT
The 864g EVE 50PL LiIon battery will CG in the heli at exactly the same mounting location on the battery rail as the SMC. The fit is very tight - not forced or touching - but no extra room (top-to-bottom / height).
RESULTS
FLIGHT TIME
-SMC HV Lipo - 5:09 (Note: run down to 3.84/cell)
-EVE 50PL LiIon - 11:01 (Note: run down to 3.55/cell)
MAH Consumed
-SMC HV Lipo - 3,125 MAH
-EVE 50PL LiIon - 6,856 MAH
MAX Head Speed
-SMC HV Lipo - 2,300 rpm
-EVE 50PL LiIon - 2,230 rpm
MAX Amps
-SMC HV Lipo - 169.77 amps
-EVE 50PL LiIon - 183.49 amps
PERFORMANCE (Beans and Balls)
I do not sense any difference between the performance of these batteries. The slightly higher (13.7amp) difference (in favor of the EVE 50PL LiIon) is likely just me being a little more comfortable / aggressive on the second flight. Similarly, the head speed (70 rpm) difference (in favor of the SMC LIPO), is mostly likely due to the ESC governor, not a battery.
I flew a 50% / 50% mix of Medium and High Head Speeds.
I am a “sport flyer” - loops, stall turns, rolls, Cuban Eights, Inverted, backwards flight. There are many “full collective dumps”… but just not held for a long time.
Smack 3D will be a higher demand flight than the one I performed - so we’ll need to find another pilot to do those tests.
LOWEST VOLTAGE MEASURED DURING FLIGHT
-SMC HV Lipo - 21.02v
-EVE 50PL LiIon -19.41 volts (note: I landed at 20.4v (motor running) and resting pack voltage after the flight was 21.35v / 3.55v / cell)
END OF FLIGHT BATTERY TEMPERATURES
-SMC HV Lipo - 101F / 38.3C
-EVE 50PL LiIon - 108F / 42.2C
CONCLUSION
Similar to yesterday with the 80mm Avanti EDF - these LiIon flight batteries literally “double” (plus some) the flight time as compared to today’s state-of-the-art LIPO.
If someone had told me a month ago - that you could fly a 600 class helicopter at 2000 - 2300 rpm head speeds
for more than 10 minutes on a ‘single’ pack - I would have called that person “crazy”.
The amp loads, temps and power are all equally impressive - and so surprising. The flight times speak for themselves and are truly transformative compared to LIPO batteries.
